Bacate and Pesado were on a motorcycle to the footage after she went into labor. A mapper, also on a motorcycle, passed by and rushed to Toulouse to recover Noripa Malate. She found the little crow when she got there. Malate urged Pesado to advance.
Malate tightened the scissors with water after the baby was born, then cut the umbilical cord. Pesado and his child, a boy, were helped into a pick-up vehicle that would transport them to the town of Toulouse.
The extraordinary birth was documented by photographer Lysey Αddario while she was working for Save the Childre, which is assisting in the reconstruction of the healthcare system in the areas affected by Haiya.
“I've never seen anything like this,” says Αddario. “It was a truly community effort. If you see a child born like this, and it's beautiful, you have to think: it's some kind of miracle.
